The Basics
Character Name: Narcissa Malfoy PB: Joely Richardson Age: 46 Birthday: 4th April 1955 Wand: Ash, 10 inches, unicorn tail-hair, flexible. House in School: Slytherin Bloodline: Pure-blood and of an excellent lineage. Political Views: Narcissa views the Ministry and its incompetent bureacracy with some disdain; its lack of talent has been demonstrated to her many times, through the ease with which her husband, as well as various friends and relatives, have manipulated both the system and its representatives. In many ways, Narcissa holds herself to be 'above' the Ministry; her class of wizard is that which can make things happen smoothly, even if this is in slight contradiction to the law. She is prejudiced in favour of pure-bloods, and in particular old, wealthy blood - she views the outcome of the war as regretful, though concerns for her own and her immediate family's comfort and safety take priority over political ideology. Currently, Narcissa holds the Ministry in contempt, particularly with its 'tracking devices' and attempts for security; however, she outwardly acquieses to all its restrictions. She does not display her feelings regarding politics and blood openly, as this would not further her family's re-integration into society. The Ministry and its political structure is a tool that can be manipulated to bring the Malfoy name back into high repute and influence. If a movement is made towards regaining pure-blood power, Narcissa will participate, but her involvement will be influenced by discussion with her husband, and she will not act in a way that risks her family's reputation. She would seek to undermine the status quo, rather than overthrow it. |
Appearance
Height: 5'7" Weight: 60 kg Build: Narcissa is tall, and slender enough, though not athletically trim. She is on the slighter side of curvy, and has taken care not to 'let herself go' in middle age. Her presentation is aided by the fact that she does not slouch, or mope around; in public, and for most of the time in private, she is always poised and under control. Eyes: Blue Hair: A light ash-blonde, though not the near-white colour possessed by both husband and son. Dress style: Elegant. Narcissa's natural taste is not gaudy, though she does display obvious signs of wealth - for example a casual piece of jewellery, such as a necklace, that costs well over a hundred Galleons. Everything she wears is extremely well-tailored, in a colour and cut to suit and flatter. Her garments are, almost without exception, robes - she owns but four examples of Muggle attire (this being the absolute minimum, of course), bought primarily for the necessity of taking Draco to King's Cross station. She does, of course, follow fashion - and in better times helped lead it among the best society - but avoids sudden fads and phases - when one is over forty, it is not wise to try and run with twenty-year-olds. Narcissa will never be seen dressed casually or sloppily - it simply is not in her to be like that, even in private. Discerning Marks: Narcissa is reasonably tall, and certainly distinctive with her pale hair and not unattractive features. She can fairly be described as beautiful, though equally those who dislike her can remark upon the sneer that mars her features somewhat. Ever giving the appearance of being perfectly co-ordinated, she moves gracefully, though not athletically. Never seen in public without the highest degree of care for her personal appearance (and smart and neat at all times at home), the dishevelled look is abhorrent to her. She has aged gracefully, and though she could not pass for a woman below thirty-five, she certainly would not be marked as anything more than a year or two above her actual age. The only time Narcissa loses her elegance is when overcome by emotion; then, the fall is somewhat catastrophic, though she takes pains to return to normal once the outburst is over.
Personality
Narcissa can be marked by a deep desire for comfort and a deep distaste for any form of work. She is lazy, and has never needed to be otherwise - save for desperate moments during the second war. If kept in the high level of luxury she has been used to all her life, then she is generally content. Narcissa's wit is quite sharp, and amongst close acquaintance she can be very cutting and disparaging. While not one of the world's greatest thinkers, her command of social conversation is excellent. She knows how to conduct herself in society, how to say the right thing and give the right appearance, and, crucially, enjoys this role. A world of two-faced politics is, to her, an enjoyable one; a chance to manipulate and influence, rather than a conflict of identity and honesty. The only time she does not enjoy this is when she is not at the top of the hierarchy or near it; when she does not have influence, does not have implicit control. Then, bewildered by this alien lack of rank, she retreats as gracefully as possible from the situation. Narcissa does not form many close relationships; the majority of her acquaintance are unworthy of such. She does, however, have very strong bonds to family - even Bellatrix, in the height of her madness, is dear, and though she avoids any mention of Andromeda, and thinks of her with genuine disgust, were her former sister to wholly renounce every Mudblood-favouring sentiment and express deep regret for her actions, a reconciliation would not be entirely impossible - providing, of course, that Andromeda understood her lessened place. Narcissa's relationship to Lucius Malfoy is perhaps one of her closest; sharing her life with him from day to day, they know each other well and their personalities provide a balance that minimises conflict. However, her own needs would come over his in any pressing situation. She is most selfless when it comes to her son - Narcissa, when pushed, will go to desperate lengths to help and protect him. Though never strong against pain and discomfort, she would endure these for Draco's sake - an honour given to no one else. When describing her relationships, Narcissa would rarely use the word 'love', except perhaps in relation to Draco, or very rarely Lucius. For example, if asked if she cared for Bellatrix, she would reply that her sister 'was family'. The Black family's passionate temper has not escaped Narcissa. Though perhaps one of the most restrained members of that family, she feels more strongly than her husband does, and her temper is lost more easily. She cannot endure irritation; the source must be removed immediately. Flattery and deference do soothe her, though she is generally aware of the underlying motive behind such actions. She is not especially clever, nor that talented a witch; her skills are those which many would view as shallow and worthless. Nevertheless, Narcissa has a true silver, serpent's tongue; the ability to charm and persuade has never left her. Yes, her husband was accused of those terrible things - but she's such an elegant woman, so lovely to talk to; no, I don't believe the rumours at all. Though less flashy than blatant charisma, Narcissa's natural talent for ingratiation have long assisted her husband in society, acting as oil between the cogs of ministers, gold and delicate understandings. It is even more valuable now, as her family seeks to bring itself back to political power and influence.
Psychology
Introvert/Extrovert: Both and neither; Narcissa is always aware of the face she is displaying, and while she does enjoy the socialite lifestyle she is always, to some extent, saying the right thing and acting the right way. She does not regret or resent this, however - for the most part, it is enjoyable. She is extroverted in that she has few compunctions about entering company and leading it. She is introverted in that she has few close acquaintance, and very few 'friends'. Boggart: During the war, her Boggart was her son, dead and bloodied. Ante- and post-bellum, her Boggart has returned to a slavering werewolf; quite aside from her sisters and cousins instilling a great fear of them in a six-year-old Narcissa through gruesome stories, it is - to her - the personfication of everything unruly, uncontrolled, tainted, disgusting, sullied, outcast, corrupted and unmanipulable. Patronus: Narcissa cannot produce a corporeal Patronus; on the few attempts she has made to cast the spell, the most she has been able to produce is a diffuse silver cloud.
Sexuality
Narcissa has never been physically or sexually attracted to another woman with any form of strength; she is heterosexual and does bear a little distaste for those of other orientations, though nothing like her dislike for those of lesser blood. She sees same-sex relations as inferior to those between members of the opposite sex. Narcissa has never been a great believer in monogamy, though she is not as hedonistic as some of those around her. She takes her pleasures when she wants them, as she wants them, and usually makes the effort to be the controlling party - though not with Lucius. She is attracted to her husband - as she asked her friends in her youth, who wouldn't be? - even after over twenty years of marriage, and does feel affection, even love for him. The marriage was largely pragmatic, however - he was extremely eligible, and essentially the highest match that Narcissa could make. She was attracted to him, a bonus, and they got on well enough for her to be certain that married life would be endurable. Over the years, while she has not been completely faithful physically, Lucius has always been held as the highest among her male acquaintance; it was not too much of a hardship to refrain from activities with anyone else when Draco was being conceived. She views extra-marital relations as devoid of emotions such as love; they are something pleasant, to be enjoyed every now and again. They have lessened in number as she has aged.
Lifestyle
Occupation: She doesn't work, and has never worked; Narcissa manages the day-to-day, in-house affairs of her home. Residence: Malfoy Manor, Wiltshire Financial Status: Extremely well-off, though a little less affluent than before the second war. Narcissa has never lacked luxury.
Family
Parents? Cygnus Black and Druella Rosier Siblings? Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks (disowned and unacknowledged) Family dynamics: Narcissa is married to Lucius Malfoy, and has one son with him, Draco Malfoy. Narcissa is not the rebellious type. She enjoys her comfort, and so rarely gave her parents trouble. Though she could spark off passionate arguments with her sisters, and enjoyed several feuds during her schooldays (yes, enjoyed, as long as she had the upper hand!), Narcissa never caused any real strife. Her association and engagement with Lucius Malfoy was encouraged by her parents, though not of their initiative; once again, Narcissa had chosen the most effective path to secure her own comfort. She views her relationship with her husband as good. Narcissa, for the most part, defers to Lucius' decisions, as she does respect him. However, this respect is tempered with a demand for respect from him in return - she is not some meek, powerless woman, and nor is she a trophy wife and tool for his needs. As long as this tacit understanding is present, however, she allows Lucius to guide their family's path. She does have a strong affection for him, and could honestly say she loved him, if she so desired. Lucius is, to her, the best example of a man that is present in their society, though this admiration is not blind. She supports her husband's plans and is rarely adverse to aiding him in those parts relating to privelige and influence in social and political spheres. Periods of discord between her and her husband tend to be characterised by silence on her part, rather than arguments. Currently, Narcissa has little desire for an affair; there are other, more pressing concerns right now. She dearly loves her son, and this affection can display itself through being (in Draco's eyes, no doubt) over-protective and interfering. Not to a huge extent - at least, not while Draco's life is not in danger - but, perhaps, a little too concerned for a young man's ease. She spoils Draco thoroughly, and can rarely refuse his wishes; used to being given everything she wants, she cannot see why this should be different for her son. Her desire is that Draco should receive all the comfort, wealth and privelige that his father has enjoyed, and she hopes that he will become as good as or a better man than Lucius. |
History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time
Narcissa was a popular girl at Hogwarts, generally leading her female peers, and enjoying a fair status amongst the boys. Snobbish and often rude, she could nevertheless be flattering company for any girl with aspirations for the top. After Hogwarts, Narcissa lived with her parents until her marriage; there were few significant relationships or affiliations in her life, but instead a general mix of the best of company, with a network of favours and understandings that ensured mutual advantage for all parties involved. Narcissa's role in the first war was relatively limited; not a Death Eater, and with no desire to become one, she let her sister and husband do the Dark Lord's dirty work. During this time, her son was conceived and born. Her most troubled moment in the first war came at its end - with Lucius in danger of exposure and imprisonment, she feared for the life she was accustomed to, and for her son's future. However, she was quickly restored to complacency. The interwar period was one of contentment for Narcissa. Though she did not like the status quo with its objectively fair treatment of Muggle-borns, she was not in any great hurry to change it. Her life was comfortable, her family was prospering; what did she truly have to be unhappy about? This changed in the second war. Aware from the start that this would be far more dangerous, Narcissa watched events unfold with a much less complacent eye. It was no longer the case that participation was natural for her set; Lucius was taking a definite risk. Her horizons narrowed to herself, her husband, and her son. With Lucius captured and the Malfoy name discredited, many of Narcissa's worst fears were realising themselves. As her son found himself entering the company that had resulted in Lucius' capture, Narcissa realised that her son was utterly unprepared for such actions. She acted in the one way she thought might help - by seeking the aid of Severus Snape. When things continued to go downhill, she accepted an offer of protection and hiding from the Order. Though she had not changed her views in any way, she sought only the preservation of as much of her family and life as possible. Her husband's release was an unbridled relief; admiring the talent with which he has turned around the worst of situations, Narcissa is eager to begin rebuilding the lifestyle she knew. She is of one mind with Lucius as to the furthering of their status and influence, and is flattered by the attentions of Millicent Morsus and those like her - they are a sign that all has not been lost, and that in fact Narcissa is once again desirable, highly sought after, at the top of her game.
